Last Friday, the Hawaii chess community witnessed an exhilarating display of skill and
strategy as National Master Paul Iinuma took on 27 members in a simultaneous
exhibition. The exhibition was hosted by the Legislature, as part of Art at The Capitol, an
annual art event at the Hawaii State Capitol, and marked a significant effort by the
Hawaii Chess Federation to promote chess awareness and showcase local talent.

In a thrilling series of matches, each player was granted 45 minutes on their clock with
no increments, adding a layer of intensity to the games. Despite the formidable
challenge of facing a National Master, three members of the Hawaii chess community
emerged victorious. Carmichael Ines, Franklin Nguyen, and Nathan Wong managed to
secure wins against NM Iinuma, as a reward, they will receive an honorary medal, and
will have their entry fee waived at an upcoming HCF event.

The exhibition not only provided an opportunity for participants to test their skills
against a seasoned competitor but also served as a platform to celebrate the vibrant
chess culture flourishing within Hawaii. With 24 victories under his belt, National Master
Iinuma showcased his mastery of the game, while also fostering an environment of
friendly competition and camaraderie among players.

The success of the event was made possible through the support of the Hawaii State
Foundation of Culture and The Arts, whose assistance in producing the exhibition was
instrumental. Their commitment to promoting cultural events that enrich the community
contributed to the overall success of the exhibition.

As the Hawaii Chess Federation continues its mission to spread the joys of chess and
nurture local talent, events like the simultaneous exhibition serve as a testament to the
enduring appeal and universal allure of the game. With each move made and each
match contested, the chess community in Hawaii grows stronger, united by a shared
passion for the timeless game of thinkers and kings.

The event took place on April 12, 2024.
