The Hawaii Chess Federation (HCF) kicked off its scholastic tournament calendar for the 2024/25 school year with the October Sectional event held on Saturday, October 5th, at Washington Middle School. The tournament, which consisted of five rounds of chess played at a time control of G45 (45 minutes per player) with a 5-second increment, boasted over 50 student participants and a handful of adult players as well.

After a long and exciting day of chess, our two stand-out performances were delivered by Ty Chen Dutoit from Punahou School, who won the high school (K-12) section with a perfect score of 5.0, and Wenxuan Zhu from Maryknoll School, who won the primary school (K-2) section with a perfect score as well. Other first place winners included: Koapaka Satterfield from the Homeschool team, who won the middle school (K-8) section with a score of 4.5; Apollo Van Brunt from Innovations Public Charter School on the Big Island, who won the elementary school (K-5) section with a score of 4.5; and Christopher Bueno, who won the Adult section with a perfect score of 4.0. The team competition was equally intense, with first place prizes going to ‘Iolani School (K-12), Punahou School (K-8 and K-5), and Maryknoll School (K-2).

Congratulations to our winners and to all participants for their hard work and dedication to chess! Our next tournament will be held on November 9th at Washington Middle School – we look forward to seeing you there!
