CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED!
Thank you to all who participated in our 2023 State Chess Open. The recently concluded chess tournament brought together players from various skill levels, from ambitious novices to seasoned masters and experts. Organized with precision and attention to detail, the event spanned several days and featured a mix of formats, including blitz and classical chess. With a diverse pool of talent, the stage was set for intense competition. In any chess tournament, there are always a few players who stand out as the ones to watch. This time was no different. Players with impressive track records, rising stars eager to prove themselves, and local talents with a home-ground advantage all converged to make this tournament a spectacle.
In the end, it was National Master Paul Iinuma who emerged as the tournament’s ultimate victor. His consistent and calculated play earned him a well-deserved first place, along with the admiration of fellow competitors.
Notable Performance #1: Miss Aurelia White won all five (5) of her reserve rounds, placing her in first place within the reserve category. She won the Women’s State Championship with her stellar performance. She also won 7 out of 9 rounds within her Blitz division, which also placed her in first place for Blitz Division 3.
Notable Performance #2: Mr. Igor Dmitriev started off strong with his first win against former State Champion, Gabriel White, playing Black. His second win was against Fide Arbiter, Lawrence Cohen, in round two playing White. In the third round, he defeated higher rated Mark Chen playing Black.
Notable Performance #3: Mr. Bobby Lyon wowed us with a perfect score in the Blitz 4 section. He came in as an unrated blitz player and dominated with 11 out of 11 wins.
