The Hawaii Chess Federation hosted the 2025 Guy Ontai Hawaii K-12 Scholastic Championship tournament on Saturday, April 12th, at Mary, Star of the Sea School. The tournament, which consisted of five rounds of chess played at a time control of G45+5 (45 minutes per player with a 5-second increment), boasted more than 230 participants from over 30 schools across the Hawaiian islands. This was Hawaii’s largest ever scholastic tournament, replete with incredible performances and nail-biting finishes!

After a hard-fought and exciting day of chess, we crowned individual and team champions across the four grade sections as follows:

  • The K-2 Primary School division champion was Wenxuan Zhu from Maryknoll Grade School, with a perfect score of 5.0
  • The K-5 Elementary School division co-champions were Eito Nishida from Kamalii Elementary School and Alphaeus Tse from Waikiki Elementary School, both with perfect scores of 5.0
  • The K-8 Middle School division co-champions were Koapaka Satterfield, Kevin Ching, and Aurelia White, all from the Homeschool team and all three with perfect scores of 5.0
  • The K-12 High School division champion was Ty Dutoit from Punahou School, with a perfect score of 5.0
  • The team champions were Punahou School (for the K-2, K-5, and K-12 divisions) and the Homeschool team (for the K-8 division)

Congratulations to our champions and to all participants for their hard work and dedication to chess! Our next tournament will be the State Rapid Championship, which will take place on Saturday, May 10, at Washington Middle School – more information to come.
