December 2024 Scholastic Sectional Tournament Report

The Hawaii Chess Federation hosted its December 2024 Scholastic Sectional tournament on Saturday, December 14th, at Washington Middle School. The tournament, which consisted of five rounds of chess played at a time control of G45 (45 minutes per player) with a 5-second increment, boasted over 90 student participants and a handful of adult players as well.

After a long and exciting day of chess, the stand-out performance was delivered by Jacob Wong from Kaimuki Christian School, who won the elementary school (K-5) section with a perfect score of 5.0. Other first place winners included: Anson Li from Aliamanu Elementary School, who won the primary school (K-2) section with a score of 4.5; Kuliaikapono Shirota-Kapalu from Hongwanji Mission School, who won the middle school (K-8) section with a score of 4.5; and Ty Dutoit from Punahou School, who won the high school (K-12) section with a score of 4.5. The team competition was equally intense, with first place prizes going to Hanahau’oli School (K-2), Punahou School (K-5 and K-8), and ‘Iolani School (K-12).
